Porto forward Hulk has hit back at critics of his selection for the Olympic Games, saying he has “nothing to prove” to the likes of Romario.

Hulk, 25, is one of Europe’s most sought-after players, with clubs like Chelsea reportedly interested, but is still not considered good enough for the Seleção by many in his homeland.

“Everyone has their point of view, their way of thinking,” Hulk told Globo Esporte. “I admire Romario, he was my idol along with Ronaldo. I have nothing to prove to anybody. I just have to play football.

“It’s the first time I have joined the squad in Brazil, I’m happy. It’s amazing how much the fans love the players.

“I was expecting the call. Mano had told me. It’s a great responsibility, but I am ready to help the team.”
