São Paulo are attempting to loan Arsenal midfielder Denilson for another season after conceding they cannot afford to buy him outright.
The 24-year-old, who is a product of São Paulo"s youth academy, left Brazil in 2006 but returned on a season-long loan last summer.
São Paulo were hoping to make the move permanent but they are unable to meet Arsenal"s value estimations, which is reportedly around €6million.
Joao Paulo de Jesus Lopes, the club"s vice-president, told Globo Esporte that he is unsure as to whether Arsenal will allow Denilson to return to Brazil next season.
He said: "Arsenal want him to return but we are waiting for [director of football] Adalberto Baptista to have talks with them.
"Maybe we will manage to extend the loan for six more months or even another year."
Denilson struggled to secure a regular first-team place during his time in North London but has since made 36 domestic appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 18 goals.
When asked about Arsenal’s view on Denilson, De Jesus Lopes added: "They liked his performances and his development. That"s why they want him to return."
