Meanwhile, Botafogo were the first of the big four Rio clubs in action, taking on a Bangu side who have yet to win a single game in the Campeonato Carioca this season.

Despite the Fogão being the over-whelming favourites, they were held to a 1-1 draw. Substitute Cidinho gave the Serie A outfit the lead in 74th minute, before former-Bota striker Alimir equalised just seconds later. Read more here.

In the early Sunday kick-off, Vasco were able to cruise to a 3-0 victory over a Madureira side who have won just two games this season. The Cruz de Malta’s goals came courtesy of Juninho Pernambucano, Fellipe Bastos and Allan.

In the stand out game of the round, Flamengo managed to overcome their arch-rivals Fluminense 2-0 on Sunday. Unlike most Fla-Flu encounters, this game was far from a classic.

Ronaldinho’s penalty gave the Rubro Negro the lead in the 22nd minute, before former Manchester United midfielder Kleberson found the back of the net two minutes later.

Life was to be made easier for Fluminense five minutes before half time, when Ronaldinho received his second yellow for a foul on Edinho.

However, despite playing over a whole half with a one-man advantage, Flu rarely managed to really test Flamengo keeper Paulo Victor, clearly missing the inform trio of Fred, Deco and Wellington Nem – who Abel Braga had decided to rest.
