On Monday, Flamengo’s medical department discovered that the 33-year-old midfielder had an irregular heartbeat during a routine health test and it was feared that the player’s career could have been over.

However on Friday evening, club doctor Serafim Borges revealed the positive news at a press conference.

“Renato’s career will continue. He will undergo surgery and after seven to ten days he will be able to return to training,” said Borges.

“In the past, an arrhythmia like this would rule an athlete out of any physical activities. But today, with the evolution of medicine, we are able to make an intervention to stop this problem.”
