Many were bemused by Kaka’s absence from last week’s friendly encounter with Bosnia, with Flamengo’s Ronaldinho included to bring experience to the midfield.

“It is very likely that the squad for the Olympic Games will beincluded two years later,” said the Brazilian coach in an interview published on Tuesday by France Football magazine.

Asked whether Kaka, 29, still has a chance to join-up with the national team once more, the coach replied by down-playing Kaka’s importance: “Our football is very rich …”.

“Great players will regret that fact. But, I have to leave a window open for both players with a history with the national team, whose experience can be useful, as well as for the young promises that may surge to the top in six months,” said the coach.

“I do not have an explanation for all players who were not summoned. It is a matter of our opinion, evaluation,” the coach had said when asked about Kaka after announcing the list of 23-man squad for the last game.

The timing of the interview’s publication is embarrassing for Mano Menezes as Kaka enjoyed a fine display on the weekend, starring as Real Madrid overcame Espanyol 5-0 in Spain. The Brazilian bagged himself a goal and two assists.
