In what was not a game to write home about for either defence, Luiz was his normal self. Wandering forward to offer good attacking thrust, the Brazilian also offered worrying moments in defence.

Having risen well to head home a cross to give Chelsea a 3-0 lead (via the back of Rio Ferdinand), all the good work was soon undone as Chicharito Hernandez sealed United’s comeback with a late header, having completely lost his marker.

It remains to be seen whether Luiz continues to be preferred to Gary Cahill in the coming weeks.
