The former Porto midfielder looked almost certain to join the Verdão having already undergone a medical with the club on Monday.

However Palmeiras’ vice-president Roberto Frizzo has revealed the deal is on the verge of collapse because Vasco have increased Carlos Alberto’s valuation.

”He (Carlos Alberto) expressed his desire to play here and Felipão (Scolari) accepted. So we went to Vasco and the President Roberto Dinamite was willing to release him, then we had the values and started negotiations.”

”But after that the values started to change. There was this disagreement that made it impossible to negotiate. He started to change the numbers that made it too expensive. That’s the reason why the deal is practically discarded.”

Palmeiras have so far made three new signings ahead of the new season: Daniel Carvalho from Atlético Mineiro as well as Juninho and Román from Figueirense.
