“The Brazilian national team is not the best team in the world, the results have shown us this,” said the much berated Brazilian coach. “We have four teams ahead of us and one of them is South American: Uruguay.

“The other three are the Netherlands, Spain and Germany. We need a return to playing football to get to that level again.”

The coach was also clear that he planned to use the 2012 Olympics as preparation for the Word Cup, given the lack of preparation before the 2014 World Cup.

“We have lost competitive action by not being in the qualifiers, but without the pressure of this competition we can build a more peaceful selection.

“You have to use the Olympics as a stage and many of the players are likely to be in the group in 2014.

“Then by the Confederations Cup the national team will be ready.”
