The attacking midfielder, who turned 19 just last month, scored the first Brazilian goal and put in a man of the match performance in Belem, helping Mano Menezes" team beat Argentina 2-0 and win the inaugural Superclasico de las Americas.
It was Lucas" eight appearance for the senior side, and the first time he had found the net.
Now, as he receives plaudits from across South America, the teenager could not hide his delight after such a decisive match.
“Everyone has their time, and I was waiting for mine to come. My father and mother have always taught me this," he explained in an interview with the official Sao Paulo website on Thursday.
“I am delighted to have helped my team come away with a victory".
Despite his joy, however, Lucas refused to dwell on the fixture; and insisted that his priority now was to support Sao Paulo"s bid for the 2011 Brasileirao title.
“There is no greater feeling than beating Argentina, starting the game and scoring. But now I will try to continue in the same vein for Sao Paulo to ensure I keep returning [to the national side]," he assured.
Lucas is expected to start alongside Luis Fabiano when the club take on Flamengo this Sunday. Sao Paulo are currently three points behind leaders Vasco after 26 matches.
