Faced by a defender on the right side of the penalty area, Damiao flicked the ball over his opponent, before attempting a lob towards goal. He was inches away from a ‘golazo,’ as he was unlucky to see his effort come back off the post.
“It was an improvisation I thought of to get past the defender,” Damiao told SporTV. “I have done this sometimes in the Internacional shirt. Unfortunately, I was not able to score this time.”
The attempt drew applause from legendary Argentine striker Mario Kempes, to which Damiao responded: “I just want to thank him. I’m so happy.”
When asked if he was the best Brazilian striker at the moment, Damiao humbly replied: “I don’t know. We have many good centre forwards. But I want to be in the middle, for sure, and I will work hard for it.”
