The 28-year-old had been regularly called up to the Seleção squad in the past, and was one of the 23 players chosen by Mano Menezes to represent the country at the Copa America in July.

However, last night was the first time Jefferson saw some playing action, and he could not hide his delight at finally picking up his first cap, and keeping a clean sheet in the process.

“It was the most special game of my life,” he told CBF. “It was a moment I have expected for some time, but the longer you wait to make your debut, the more anxious you get about it happening.

“I was pleased that I was able to have a good game,” he continued. “I am happy, very happy, and I must share it with my wife,” concluded the ‘keeper, before leaving the interview to phone his family.
