Mesut Ozil gave Real the lead, before a world-class finish from David Villa and a customary goal from Lionel Messi gave Barca the half-time advantage at the Bernabeu. Xabi Alonso equalised in the second-half to leave the tie in the balance ahead of Wednesday’s second leg.
For the home side, Marcelo started and played the full 90 minutes, almost conceding a penalty for a foul on Pedro late on. Kaka, who had been strongly linked with a move away during the summer, was an unused substitute.
Dani Alves and Adriano both started the game for Barca, operating as the right and left full-backs respectively. Alves played the whole game, but Adriano was replaced on 62 minutes by Gerard Pique.
