Paraguay had the better of the chances in the first half, with Ecuador ‘keeper Marcelo Elizaga making fine stops to deny Edgar Barreto and Nestor Ortigoza. At the other end, Segundo Castillo shot just wide from distance.

After the break, the best openings again fell to the Paraguayans, as Marcelo Estigarribia dragged a shot wide before Roque Santa Cruz saw his header brilliantly kept out by Elizaga.

It means that after one game each, all the teams in Group B have one point, but zero goals between them. The next matches are on July 9, as Brazil face Paraguay and Ecuador take on Venezuela.
