After taking over at Inter in December, Leonardo led the side to second place in the Serie A and won the Coppa Italia. However, he has long been linked with a switch to Paris St Germain to work as a technical director, and is now free to do so.

“Inter and Leonardo have terminated the Brazilian’s contract on friendly terms, after six intense months and a Coppa Italia won together,” said an Inter statement.

“Everyone at Inter continues to have the utmost esteem for a person capable of repeatedly taking on new challenges.

“President Massimo Moratti and everyone at the club thank him for what has been achieved together and wish him the very best of luck for the next stage of his career.”

Leonardo’s spell at Inter had been only his second in management, with his first having been at the club’s fierce rivals AC Milan, whom he managed in the 2009-10 season.

He will be replaced in the Inter hot-seat by Gian Piero Gasperini, who was last season in charge of Genoa.
