After a goalless first leg, Neymar and Danilo put Santos in the comfort zone, before Penarol made a fight of it with an own-goal from Durval. However, the Uruguayan side could not force an equaliser, and Peixe were able to lift the trophy for the third time, and the first since 1963.
Santos had the better of the first half, with Elano twice going close, but the opening goal arrived just one minute after the break. Arouca did well to find Neymar unmarked on the left of the penalty area, and the young striker produced a powerful side-foot finish that goalkeeper Sosa could not handle.
On 70 minutes the Brazilians doubled their advantage. Danilo cut in from the right-hand side past his marker, and placed an accurate finish into the far corner with his weaker left foot. It was a goal that brought great delight to club legend Pele, who was watching from the stands.
It seemed as if Santos were set to cruise to victory, but Penarol ensured a tense finish when Durval knocked a low cross into his own net to make it 2-1. Neymar had a chance to seal the win late on when he hit the post, but ultimately it mattered not, as his side were able to hold on to become champions.
