Socrates, one of Brazilian football’s all-time greats, swapped the South American sunshine for the bitter cold of northern England on Sunday with a 10-minute cameo appearance for tiny non-league Garforth Town. As part of an ambitious plan hatched by the club’s businessman owner and manager Simon Clifford, the 50-year-old trotted on as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw with Northern League rivals Tadcaster. For most of the game he sat in the dug out looking extremely cold! Around 2,000 spectators squeezed into the Yorkshire club’s Wheatley Park ground, the vast majority of them there just to catch a glimpse of a player who captained the classic 1982 Brazil World Cup side that included the likes of Zico and Junior. Socrates’ signing is part of Clifford’s 25-year plan to get Garforth into the Premier League.
