The young Sao Paulo midfielder came on as a substitute in the 64th minute to pick up his second cap for the Seleção. He has been linked with some top European sides after scoring nine goals in 39 games for his club, and speaking to reporters after the game he revelled in the attention from the fans.

“I have never experienced it in my life,” he said. “The whole stadium was calling for me to come on. It was a wonderful sensation.” Lucas was unable to help Brazil break the deadlock however, and added: “I got on and tried to justify it, but unfortunately the match winning goal didn’t come.”

Now, Lucas is hoping to get some more game time against Romania on Tuesday, and is dreaming of a place alongside Brazil legend Ronaldo. The former Barcelona, Internazionale and Real Madrid striker will be making his farewell appearance for the national team, and Lucas is determined to impress him.

“I keep imagining what it would be like to play alongside Ronaldo. If I get on the pitch and have this opportunity, I’ll do my best.” As well as Ronaldo, Lucas will be hoping to catch the eye of Mano Menezes, who must decide after the Romania game whether or not to take him to the Copa America.
