Shakhtar had an incredible five Brazilians in team, and with Naldo lining up for their German rivals Werder Bremen (Diego was suspended) it was very much a Brazilian UEFA cup Final. Eventually won by an extra-time goal by Jádson, giving Shakhtar Donetsk the UEFA Cup.
Shakhtar, runners-up in the Ukrainian league last season, took the lead after 25 minutes, thanks to a smart finish by Luiz Adriano. The Brazilian striker, ran Bremen’s defence ragged and embarrassed Tim Wiese with a delicate chipped left-foot finish after the Bremen goalkeeper went to ground too early. But 10 minutes before half-time Bremen drew level when Naldo’s thumping 30-yard free-kick was tamely palmed into the net by Ukraine international Pyatov.
But the night belonged to Shakhtar when seven minutes into extra time, Jádson put the Ukrainians back in front – and this time it was Werder keeper Wiese who was the cuplrit.
Jadson did not get a full contact on Darijo Srna’s cross, but it squirmed through the hands of Wiese.
