Fortaleza and Corinthians play out to a goalless draw at the at Arena Castelão
Fortaleza and Corinthians could only settle for a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night. The game was pretty uneventful and saw more controversies than chances. There were lots of penalty claims in the second half and red cards handed to both sides in the 80th and 96th minutes respectively with Jô and Bruno Melo on the receiving ends.
Fortaleza started the match better and had the first attempt on goal early on from outside the goal area.
Timão responded but their effort was nothing close to threatening Felipe’s goal.
The first big chance of the first half came in the 14th minute. Osvaldo made an individual run into his opponent’s box and forced a great save from Cassio.
Corinthians started to regain confidence and improve their all-round game, going forward and creating spaces.
Towards the end of the opening 45 minutes, both sides had a shot at goal but were unable to find the target to open up the scoring before the break. The first half ended in a draw.
The second half started as the first with Fortaleza taking the initiative to score early on. In a counter attacking situation David received the ball in the goal area and forced a save from Cássio in the opening 4 minutes of the second period.
In the 57th minutes, there was a penalty claim on for the away side after Gabriel went down but after the review by the VAR the spot kick wasn’t given.
Jô was shown a red card for a dangerous foul on Felipe in the 80th minutes before Bruno Melo got the matching order also before the game closed.
Fortaleza returns to the field next Saturday and will take on Red Bull Bragantino. Corinthians will play a day later against São Paulo at the Neo Química Arena.
