Despite losing 2-1 to São Paulo on Thursday night, results went their way and Flamengo are the Brazilian Championship winners of 2020!

Their latest league triumph is the eighth in their history and sees them defend their league crown from 2019.

Also on the pitch, São Paulo had something to celebrate as well. The win saw them guaranteed of a direct spot in the Libertadores 2021 tournament. Luciano, who was one of the scorers of the night, also won the Craque do Jogo alongside Bragantino’s Claudinho with 18 goals.

It was a dramatic end to the campaign to say the least. Flamengo finished the season with 71 points, just one ahead of Internacional. Fla had to wait for a nervy final minutes that saw them briefly support Corinthians (who were playing against Inter). Edenilson’s goal which was ruled out by VAR added more suspense to it all. However, the Flamengo players erupted in celebrations when the final whistle was blown in Beira-Rio.

After winning successive league titles in 2019 and 2020, the current Flamengo side have repeated the heroics of the 80s, when they also won back to back titles in 1982 and 1983.

Alongside the Brasileirão, Flamengo won the Brazil Super Cup, the Recopa Sul-Americana and the Carioca Championship. A count of four trophies means the year ‘2020’ is the most successful one for Flamengo in their history.

São Paulo legend and current Flamengo coach, Rogério Ceni, continues his record of never taking a win against his former side as a coach. However, he celebrated a league triumph right in Morumbi and that would be a memory to hold on to for a long time.

Flamengo will now turn their attention to the state competitions as they take on Nova Iguaçu in in Maracanã for the Carioca on Tuesday.
