‘Many hid’ after 7-1 defeat to Germany, says David Luiz
Arsenal defender David Luiz claims that ‘many hid’ in the wake of Brazil’s 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.
Luiz was heavily criticised for his performance in the devastating defeat. Luiz says the criticism was unfair and many of his teammates took cover from the public gaze.
“People remembered everything I did at the World Cup, but in football, with the result, you erase everything,” he told Benfica TV.
“After six months, for me, many people went into hiding, did not want to take responsibility or share responsibility and I carried the burden for a long time alone.
“We were not used to losing by two, three goals and we got upset. Suddenly, it was a blow, you are in Brazil, we are going to win, and suddenly you take one, take the second, and then the third.
“Everything was going wrong. Today I think, maybe at that time, as captain, at 3-0 I say ‘everyone, come here.’
“Maybe, if we did this at 3-0, everything is going wrong, we keep it 3-0 and go to the break, come back, we score a goal and everything changes.”
