Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino could not hide his delight as the Reds won the Super Cup, beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

Firmino was a half-time substitute and set up both of Sadio Mane’s goals for Liverpool, with Giroud and Jorginho scoring for Chelsea.

Firmino also converted his spot-kick in the shootout. The victory means Firmino has won trophies in each of the last three months.

He won the Champions League in June, the Copa America in July and now the European Super Cup in August.

“I have no words to describe the size of my happiness. We started the season off right. It was a very close match, against a very strong opponent, but we had calmness on penalties and we won.

“It has been a special year for me. I had not won titles in my career yet and, since June, there have been three cups. I will keep working so that this good phase does not end soon.”
