Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar has defended his appearance in a Chelsea shirt at a fancy dress party held to celebrate compatriot David Luiz’s birthday on Tuesday night.

In a photo posted on Instagram by the goalkeeper’s wife, Susana Werner, Julio Cesar and his family can all be seen in Chelsea shirts and wigs, supposedly to imitate the style of birthday boy Luiz.

The picture, though, has not gone down well with the QPR support, with the club saying they will take action against the player for wearing their traditional rivals’ shirt.

The goalkeeper, for his part, maintains there was no ill intent behind wearing the Chelsea shirt, as he simply looked to “honour” his close friend on his birthday.

“We wore the shirt to honour David Luiz, a great friend. It was nothing more than this,” he told Globo Esporte. “It was to honour someone I respect a lot.”

With QPR battling relegation in the Premier League, the timing could not be worse for the goalkeeper, and the club look set to issue a fine.
