Brazilian defender Carlos Gil believes Valenciennes’ 4-1 win over Marseille is a very important victory for the rest of his side’s season.

The 25-year-old centre-back, who was a dominant force during the game, helped his side overcome league leaders Marseille, which was their first defeat of the season.

Marseille boasted the best defence in Ligue 1 before kick-off, with just one goal conceded in their six previous matches, but they were sunk at Valenciennes’s Stade du Hainaut following a torrid first half.

Gil, whose full name is Carlos Gilberto Nascimento Silva, believes this win is very important to set Valenciennes up for a good season.

The former Cruziero player told Sambafoot: “This victory against Marseille is very important for the rest of our season.

“I think the result sums up this game. Everyone gave their best for this great victory against the league leaders.”

Goals from Gael Danic, Foued Kadir, and two from Anthony Le Tallec sealed the win for Valenciennes, who visit Toulouse in six days time.
