Arsenal defender André Santos has been banned from driving for 12 months after being caught speeding in North London last month, having been late for training.

Brazil international Santos pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention at Hendon Magistrates’ Court. He was also told to pay £3,600 in fines and legal costs.

The court heard that police officers initially Santos’s Maserati driving at high speeds after passing a speed camera on the A41 at around 9.15am.

The prosecutor alleged that Santos failed to stop for police after they turned on their sirens, with officers estimating that the player was driving at speeds in the region of 135-145mph – on a 70mph road.

The court heard how some drivers were forced to break sharply to avoid collision, before Santos was eventually stopped near the club’s training ground. He told officers he was driving quickly as he had been late for training.
