The name of the trophy between the champions of the Brasileirão and the Brazilian Cup is changing from this year onwards. The Brazilian Super Cup was renamed the Rei Super Cup, in tribute to the star Pelé, who died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 82.
“The greatest player of all time, Pelé, will be the special honoree in the competition that opens the Brazilian football season. Starting with this edition, the decisive match that brings together the champion of the Brazilian Cup and the winner of the Brasileirão will be called the Rei Super Cup,” announced the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The first edition with the new name will be held next Sunday. At the Mineirão stadium, Palmeiras, two-time champion of the Brazilian league, will face São Paulo, winner of the last Brazilian Cup. The meeting will start at 4 p.m. (Brasília time) and there will be a series of tributes to Pelé, winner of three World Cups.
A way to pay tribute to “the eternal King of football”
“Pelé deserves all the honors. His legacy will always be revered by the CBF. The Rei Super Cup is a way to give even more importance to the competition, which officially opens the Brazilian football season and which our fans have already fallen in love with,” said the president of the governing body of Brazilian football, Ednaldo Rodrigues, in an official statement.

“The idea of calling the competition Supercopa Rei is framed in a context of utmost importance for the CBF, which is to preserve the memory of Brazilian football, so that new generations do not lose the reference of the great idols of football, in this case , the greatest reference of all time. This match is one more way for us, the subjects, to pay eternal tribute to the King of football,” said CBF marketing director Lenin Franco.
