Verdão started the game much better and for most periods dominated possession as the game went on. However, they were not decisive enough upfront in creating chances. Matheus Ribeiro came close to breaking the deadlock when he got a sight on Avai’s goal after controlling a pass from Capa. He was able to take a shot but it didn’t trouble Lucas Frigeri in goal for Avai. The first half ended goalless.

The first goal came nine minutes into the second half. Defender Luiz Otávio took advantage of the leftover ball inside the small area after a corner kick and kicked hard into the goal. Chape kept on pushing and 16 minutes later they doubled their advantage. Luiz Otávio turned provider this time and made the assist for Anselmo Ramon who slotted home.

It means Verdão have one foot already in the semi-finals of the competition. The victory puts Chapecoense in a favorable situation for the return game in Ressacada. It also shows a better and much improved performance from the club than in previous stages before football got suspended. In the second leg, Chape can even afford to lose by a lone goal and would still get the luxury of qualifying regardless.

The second leg of the tie is set to take place on Sunday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Ressacada. To stand any chance of qualification, Avaí will need to win by three goals difference coupled with Chapeconese not scoring at all in order to advance to the semi-final of the competition.
