Manchester United midfielder spoke candidly with ESPN Brasil about the racist abuse he experienced during the Manchester derby on Saturday.

An alleged incident took place from the stands which appeared to be aimed at the Brazilian. The player cut a weary figure when tasked on the subject of racism post-match.

"Unfortunately, we are still in a backward society. [It is a shame] we still have to live with that [racism] in 2019. On the field, I didn’t see anything.

"I saw it only in the locker room afterwards. The guys showed me. They even threw a lighter and it hit me. I try not to care about that. I try to look ahead.

"It’s sad, but we have to keep our heads up and forget about that. We can’t give them any attention because that’s all they want."

Manchester City immediately announced that they will be investigating the footage closely and will take appropriate action if any fans are found guilty of racism.
