Aston Villa boss Dean Smith says that new signing Wesley Moraes did not take part in the 4-1 pre- season win over Charlton due to an injury.

The Brazilian scored twice against Walsall last week, but was not part of the squad that defeated the newly promoted Championship side.

Smith said he did not want to risk the player, who picked up a knock in training shortly before the friendly against the Addicks.

“Wesley played well on Wednesday and scored two goals. He also played 20 minutes against Kuwait in the week but suffered a small knock.

“It wasn’t worth the risk bringing him down today. He’s fine, though. He should be back training on Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Wesley joined the newly promoted Premier League in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugges for a club record £22m.
