Chelsea defender David Luiz says he is plying without significant pain for the first time in two years. The Brazilian cites a high tackle from Sergio Aguero in December 2016 as the beginning of an ongoing knee complaint.

Aguero was red carded for the challenge, but Luiz says the effects have only just deserted him. “‘I’m very happy about my physical condition because I was suffering over the last two years.

“Even the year we won the league, I was on the pitch many, many times with a lot of pain, but I was giving everything for the team.

“Then the next year I paid the bill that you have to pay. But I’m happy to be playing again.” Luiz also fell out with previous manager Antonio Conte, having lost his place in the side.

But under new boss Maurizio Sarri, Luiz has rediscovered his old form, setting up Ngolo Kante for his winner against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
