Roger Machado was announced as the new coach of Atlético Mineiro; he signed a contract until December 2018.
The coach’s appointment was confirmed by the board on Wednesday, but the talks began almost a week ago when the former coach of Grêmio was in Europe. After resigning from the post at Grêmio, the coach went to Europe to study and improve his knowledge in football. And it’s where the first contact between Roger and Atlético Mineiro occurred. Hours after the dismissal of Marcelo Oliveira, president Daniel Nepomuceno opened negotiations with Léo Ferreira, agent of Roger. The conversation with the businessman was to know the situation of the coach, who was also on the agenda of Pedro Abad, one of the presidential candidates of Fluminense. During the phone contact with the agent, it was agreed that the coach would not talk to another team before sitting with Nepomuceno and football director Eduardo Maluf. The meeting was scheduled for Wednesday at the home of one of the leaders, and the coach’s stance was enough for the board to make sure a positive outcome.
In the seven days between the first conversation and the meeting in Maluf’s residence, Roger Machado was not approached by another club. Even newly elected Fluminense president Pedro Abad didn’t try to contact the former Grêmio coach. With the path totally free, Atlético Mineiro formalized the proposal and reached an agreement. In the conversations with Roger, however, a point was settled. The coach will not interfere in the training that precedes the final of the Copa do Brasil, which was postponed to December 7. He has already returned to Rio Grande do Sul, his home state, to get the details of the move to Belo Horizonte and enjoy the holidays with his family. The trip to Minas Gerais will only take place in January next year.
