Chelsea had a season to forget – without titles, a terrible start in the Premier League and also suffered elimination in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Despite the underwhelming campaign of his team, Brazilian winger Willian has been highly praised for his performances, not just for Chelsea, but also for the national team. On Monday, Chelsea drew with Tottenham, and Leicester City were crowned Premier League champions. He was keen to praise the achievement of Leicester and also said that the historic achievement is good for world football. He told Globo Esporte: “They are to be congratulated, they had a great championship, and deserved to be champions. This is good for football, not just for English football, but also for world football.”
The game against Tottenham was considered as one of the most violent fixtures of the Premier League with the referee showing 12 yellow cards. Willian added: “Tottenham are a great team, and they have great players. They are having a great campaign. But they exaggerated a little in some occasions and so the game ended up that way, a little tough, even a little violent.”
Willian also talked about his team’s season, and didn’t want to put all the blame on sacked manager José Mourinho. He said: “All players are already aware of what we did this season, and we need to improve next season. But we had a very good performances. We went through many games without losing, and returned to play well, but of course it was late. I hope that next year we can start well. Everyone were guilty, not just Mourinho. All players, the coach… I think we all have to take responsibility when the team is bad. We’ve all been guilty.”
