According to vice-president Ataíde Gil Guerreiro, Internacional president Vitório Piffero came to him with a player exchange offer last week for Michel Bastos, but he rejected it without informing other members of the board.
Ataíde admitted on Thursday that a failure in communication within the board of directors led São Paulo to believe that Internacional had tried to “tap up” Michel Bastos without making an official proposal. The conversation between Ataíde and Piffero involved an offer from Internacional to exchange Alex for Michel Bastos. São Paulo were considering suing Internacional for “tapping up” the player, before Ataíde revealed that there was indeed an official offer. Ataíde said: “He wanted to make an exchange for Michel Bastos and I said at the time that we didn’t want an exchange. It was Alex. He actually spoke directly to me. I didn’t take this into consideration and didn’t tell anyone. I said I didn’t want the player and that Michel isn’t being negotiated.”
