Brazilian winger Geuvânio couldn’t hold back his tears in his first interview in a Tianjin Songjiang shirt on Saturday.
Geuvânio explained why he accepted the challenge of playing in Chinese football, and was emotional when he mentioned the agent Ismailton Santos Gomes, who took him to his first ever test at the age of 16. The 23-year-old, who was a revelation during the 2014 Campeonato Paulista, was sold to Chinese second division side Tianjin Songjiang for a fee of €11 million, and will earn an annual salary of €2.7m. He said: “I want to thank Ismailton. My family is from Sergipe. I came to São Paulo, and was playing on the terrace and he gave me the first opportunity. It was the first test. I’ll never forget that. I often had nothing to eat at home and he helped us. I thank God for what’s happening in my life. Thank you.”
“Why I accepted this offer? I looked inside my house. And family. I talked to my parents, my brothers, my whole family. The difficulties that we have, I saw this as an escape door. For me to make a greater leap in my life, in my career, in my financial life. But I’m not going just to make money. I want to make history in China. I’m still young, so I’m motivated to do the best.”
