Atlético Mineiro"s title chances suffered a huge blow following their heavy defeat [4-1] to Sport Recife on Sunday, and Corinthians" victory over Atlético Paranaense by the same score.
The defeat against Sport Recife and a win for league leaders Corinthians means the gap at the top of the table has now increased to eight points. There are still seven more games to go and the title race could still be open. Full-back Marcos Rocha lamented his team"s defeat at the Arena Pernambuco, but still does not give up hope on their title chances despite the eight point difference. He was quoted in Globo Esporte: “The important thing is to be aware that it [title] will be difficult, but not impossible. In football, anything can happen. I believe and I will continue to give my best to make that difference."
He added: “The goals were fast, making it difficult to react. That"s it. Now the focus is on the next game."
