Although they couldn’t come out as winners, Santos players seemed satisfied with the one point earned away to Sport Recife on Sunday.
Striker Ricardo Oliveira, who gave his team the lead in the 20th minute of the first-half, insisted that it was an important result. Sport goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes offered the rebound at the feet of Ricardo Oliveira after saving the initial header from Gustavo Henrique following a cross from Zeca. Ricardo Oliveira told reporters after the game: “We can say it was an important result against a great team. We managed to hold them, we could generate some scoring situations. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win.”
The result at Estádio Ilha do Retiro takes Santos to 33 points, and five short of the last spot for Copa Libertadores. Santos’ next challenge in their mission towards top-4 is at the Vila Belmiro against local rivals São Paulo.
