John Spencer, a striker for the Blues in the mid-1990s, provided an expert eye and shared his views during Chelsea TV’s coverage of the Capital One Cup final win. Since then he has taken time with the official Chelsea website to further consider that Sunday afternoon’s action, as well as reminisce about his playing days at what was a fast-changing club.

‘You don’t need to be a striker to be a Diego Costa fan,’ he responds. ‘Whether you are a Chelsea fan or not, if you watch Diego Costa you have certainly got to admire the quality he has in his game and the quality he brings, not just to Chelsea but to the Premier League as a whole.

‘Looking at the game overall, Spurs did have a good spell early on with a little more possession than Chelsea, they kept the ball well but never really threatened the Chelsea goal. They huffed and they puffed but apart from Eriksen’s free-kick, I can’t remember them having a clear shot at goal.’
