An investigation has been started after it emerged that England football fans were attacked outside the ground before their World Cup Group D clash with Uruguay in Sao Paulo yesterday evening.

Brazil’s military police have refused to comment on allegations that they offered insufficient protection to fans after they were caught up in a fracas beside the Arena de Sao Paulo.

An explosive device was thrown into a section of England supporters and it is believed that 15 Brazilian nationals have been arrested in conjuction with the incident.

A statement on behlaf of the British Consulate read: “We are aware of an incident affecting fans around the area of the Fan Festival in Sao Paulo.”

“We are working with the local authorities to establish the facts. No British nationals are believed to have been injured.”

Arena de Sao Paulo will next host a game on Monday, when Netherlands face Chile in a crucial Group B decider at 1700 GMT.
