French international Loïc Rémy believes Brazil forward Fred should be punished for his wrongdoing in Thursday’s opening World Cup match.

The Brazilian earned his side a controversial penalty in their 3-1 win against Croatia, which many felt was soft.

His former team mate at Lyon, Rémy, spoke to the Guardian about the actions of the Brazil forward on Thursday.

The QPR ace said: “He does it well, throws himself at the right time because you can see that there’s no foul at all (Dejan) Lovren doesn’t pull him back.

“Experience comes into it, and it’s important to fall at the right time. For me the striker should be punished for this kind of wrongdoing.”

Rémy went on to reveal his hope that France aren’t denied by a referee decision before insisting that Croatia deserved at least a draw from the opening World Cup match.

He added: “It’s true that it’s always infuriating to lose to refereeing mistakes, so I hope it doesn’t happen to us.

“I don’t want to be controversial, but when you look at the game the Croats played very well and deserved another result.

“Not necessarily to win, but they deserved a different result. It’s certain that referees make mistakes and you have to pay attention.”
