Brazil-born Spain striker, Diego Costa, won a penalty to get the World Cup holders off to a fine start in Salvador.

 

Xabi Alonso converted the spot-kick but it was the Netherlands’ night from there on in. The Dutch tore Spain apart with some incisive attacking play and cool finishing.

 

Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben bagged a brace each, and Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij was also on the score sheet.
