New York Cosmos midfielder Marcos Senna has backed Diego Costa to have a great World Cup with Spain.

Senna, like Costa, was Brazilian born but went on to represent Spain instead of the country of his birth.

The former Villarreal ace was quoted by Inside Spanish Football after speaking to Spanish sports daily Marca.

Senna said: “Diego has such a great personality that will make him stronger, he won’t be intimidated by the whistles from the fans, just the opposite.

“He’s a star. I’ve been cheering him on and hoping everything goes well with the Spanish national team.

“It’s normal that there’s animosity. Brazil has five World Cup titles and have seen Spain superior for many years now, and that hurts. That’s why there’s animosity.”

Senna believes Costa is prepared for the World Cup and will thrive in the potentially sour environment, he added: “Diego is very well prepared psychologically and he’s going to have a great World Cup.

“There are some people who are against what he did, but there are those who are in favour too. The most important thing is that he’s focused and shows what a great player he is.”
