Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa’s impending switch to Chelsea has received the backing of international teammate Juan Mata after the player passed a medical with the Stamford Bridge side.

Manchester United playmaker Mata, who will line up alongside Costa for Spain this summer told reporters: “I wish him the best.”

“He is a striker who will adapt well to English football because of his power and strength. He is the type of player who will shine there, but at the moment he is still a player of Atletico.”

Costa caused a media storm in pledging his international allegiance to world champions Spain despite being born in Brazil and representing them on two occasions in friendly matches in 2013.

He is expected to be Spain’s first-choice forward when the tournament gets underway next week, and will face Netherlands, Chile and Australia in Group B of the competition with a potential powderkeg second round match against the hosts in the offing, should results dictate.
