The 32-year-old defender started his career with Cruzeiro in Brazil and has impressed in Europe, playing for Ajax, Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSG.

Why has he been selected?

Although he has not made many appearances at international level, Maxwell is dependable and has a winning mentality, with the trophies to prove it. He has won all four European leagues he has played in, including consecutive titles in France in the last two years.

How has he played this season?

It has been another good season for Maxwell in the top flight of French football and he secured a one-year extension to his contract earlier this year, keeping him at PSG until June 2015.

What will his role be in Brazil?

Having beaten Atlético Madrid’s Filipe Luís to a place in the squad, Maxwell must be ready to step in if Marcelo picks up injury or a suspension.
