PSG defender Marquinhos has said he views missing out on World Cup selection as part of his learning experience as an international and that being picked for Brazil’s Under-21 squad in preparation for the Olympic Games is something that excites him.

The centre-back, 19, ony joined PSG last summer and has been learning his trade from club and national captain Thiago Silva. In an interview with Globo, Marquinhos spoke of his realism at this stage in his career: “Coach Gallo phoned me and asked if I would be interested as I was not in the World Cup squad.”

“I said yes, as the announcement of a squad is not something to refuse. I am seeking a place in the squad that is being prepared for the Olympics in Rio (in 2016) and a title that Brazil has never won.”

The Under-21 side will compete in the upcoming Toulon tournament in GFrance, and are drawn in Group B alongside South Korea, Colombia, England and Qatar.

Marquinhos has already made his debut for Brazil’s first team, gaining his solitary cap last year
