Birthday boy Roberto Carlos has warned Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid to treat the Portuguese superstars injury with care, because it could turn into a chronic injury otherwise.

Carlos turned 41 today and spoke to Radio Marca about the knee injury affecting Ronaldo, a problem that the former Brazilian left-back suffered from in his playing days.

Football Espana quoted Carlos, he said: “I had the same injury and had to strengthen the knee with a lot of fitness work and massage to remove the swelling.

“It’s a nuisance that must be treated with care. If you force it too much you just get a more chronic injury.”

Many Los Blancos fans are worried that the Real Madrid number seven will now miss several key fixtures but former player Carlos believes you can continue playing with this problem.

Carlos added: “I used to strengthen my leg 45 minutes before training, and removed the pain and played normally.

“Before training is a recovery session and before the match Madrid has everything to take away the pain.”
