Lucas Leiva could have his World Cup dream denied by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers- and has been told that the situation may not change as the English club look to secure a first Premiership crown in the coming month.

“I respect all the players and their needs but I can only think of Liverpool,” Rodgers told ESPN, “I want what’s best for Liverpool. That’s where my concentration is.”

“I’ve got to say Lucas has been absolutely incredible in his attitude. It’s been hard for him because he played a high percentage of the games when he was fit and then obviously got his injury.”

With Liverpool’s destiny in their own hands now, Rodgers is unlikely to bow to sentiment just so that Lucas can play in a home World Cup, but acknowledges that the player is ready when called upon: “He has made it known to me that he just wants to help whenever he’s called upon, whether it’s for one minute or 90 minutes, he will be ready.”
