Fluminenese midfielder Wagner has stressed the importance of winning the finals of the Carioca state championship as it could spur his team on to a successful national campaign, which gets under way in the middle of next month.

The Rio de Janeiro side have been fortunate enough to experience silverware in the past half decade and Wagner believes more could be round the corner if they maintain their form.

“If we become champions (of the Carioca), everything will change. The scenario changes and the Brazilian championship begins soon after. The semi final will be important and we have to be 100% connected and keep mistakes to a minimum.”

Fluminense won the Carioca in 2012, the same year they went on to win the Campeonato Brasileiro.
