Flamengo’s André Santos hopes to be able to fill the boots of former Manchester City midfielder Elano in the Copa Libertadores this week should he not be able to shake off the injury he suffered in last week’s clash.

Elano was forced off against Bolivian outfit Bolívar and the ex-Arsenal defender has been practicing set pieces recently to prepare for the match.

He told Lancenet: “I’ve been training a lot and when I have some opportunities I take set pieces. However, the main person is Elano who has some amazing achievements.

“He hardly misses and has been very good for Flamengo. Tomorrow I hope to be useful in this situation and maybe help Flamengo out with a victory.”

The Brazilian side need to secure an away Libertadores win but could struggle playing in altitude.

Santos isn’t worried about this factor though and believes Flamengo players have been preparing properly for the climate changes.

He said: “We’ve been here several days where the game will be played so we’re working well with this.

“I hope against Bolívar we do well and win the game to stay alive.”
