Fluminense remain top of the Carioca state championship after a 1-1 home draw against fierce city rivals Vasco da Gama at the Maracana on Sunday evening.

Flu, who are second in the championship table, played host to third-ranked Vasco in an eagerly anticipated game, and it was the visitors who took the lead after 41 minutes, Edmilson taking them ahead of Fluminense if the league table were ‘live’.

Fred, the hosts’ star striker and upon whom much pressure will be laid during this summer’s World Cup, lived up to his reputation as a big game player by bagging an equaliser after 66 minutes- the player’s return from injury obviously complete.

The result means that Fluminense are seven points adrift of Flamengo at the top of the Carioca table after 14 games with Vasco a further two points back in third.
