Brasileiro champions Cruzeiro again faltered in the Copa Libertadores as they succombed to Defensor Sporting of uruguay in the third round of fixtures in Group 5 of this year’s competition to leave them three points off the pace in the race to reach the knockout section.

Marcelo Oliveira had spoken before the game of the need to show a desire to compete physically against the team from Montevideo but his troops fell short and now must beat the same opponents in the return fixture on the 21st of this month to maintain qualification hopes.

Goals in the 64th and 78th minutes were enough to win the game, although Cruzeiro will be kicking themselves after missing a penalty through Dagoberto in the 69th minute, a goal which would have restored parity on the night.

Their next game is in the Mineiro state championship on Sunday against Tombense.
